Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year!

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. I'm excited to begin blogging again this school year. Blogging is a great way to keep parents informed about what is going on in the classroom. I frequently add updates, share pictures and links, and add book recommendations to my blog. I also add video math lessons on occasion as well. This year, I will be adding a project calendar so that if students forget to add homework and projects to their planners, parents will still be aware of upcoming due dates. I will continue to have students fill out planners on a daily basis (I model how and what to write in planners every day) as this will be an important skill to have during middle school years and beyond.

We will have a school-wide Learn the Routine night on Tuesday, September 16th from 5:00-5:30 and again at 5:30-6:00 in each classroom to accommodate families with multiple students at THINK Academy. During this time, I will walk you through a word sort using the Words Their Way program that most classrooms have been implementing for the past two years. I will also share how to students use Kidblog to respond to writing prompts, explain Book Club more in depth, and share Google Docs, Glogster, CNN Student News, and interactive journals that we will be building throughout the year.

As in years past, students will have plenty of time to complete assignments in class if they stay on task. There are at least three 20-minute Daily 5 rotations each day for reading, writing, and word work. In addition, a minimum of 20 minutes (after math instruction, which usually lasts one hour) is given on most days to complete math homework. Most students only have reading homework each night (I ask students to read for 20 minutes each night.). Students who have not passed their three-minute multiplication tests by the beginning of 5th grade will also need to practice with flash cards every night. Fact fluency is critical for 5th grade math...without it, students will struggle with the 5th grade math curriculum for the rest of the year.

My goal is to help each student to be successful in the classroom and to become lifelong learners. I hope that your child feels the enthusiasm that I have for learning. I welcome any questions you may have about your child's progress.

Presidential Wax Museum Invitation and Information

Dear THINK 5th grade families,
Our Presidential Wax Museum will be presented by Ms. Grossbier’s 5th graders on Tuesday, March 11th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at THINK Academy. Please arrive 10 minutes early so that students are ready to present by 5:30 p.m. It is important that all students are present for the wax museum, so if you are not able to attend, please try to make arrangements so that your child has a ride to the event.
Students are responsible for planning their own costumes (and props, if desired) for the event. For presidents, a white or blue dress shirt, tie, dress pants, and a suit coat (if desired) would be appropriate (students can raid dad’s/grandpa’scloset, if necessary); for first ladies, a dress appropriate for the era would be suitable (for example, a long skirt and blouse/long dress for Martha Washington; a knee-length dress/skirt for Jackie Kennedy). Makeup can be used for mustaches or beards. Please do not purchase a period costume for the occasion; rather, be creative and improvise with items already on hand or shop Goodwill or other thrift stores, if necessary.
Students have been working really hard preparing their Presidential Wax Museum projects. We hope to see you there!
The wax museum is open to the community, so please invite your family and friends for this fun event. We will be asking for a $1 donation to help fund our class trip to Upham Woods in May.
Thank you for all of your help! We look forward to seeing you.

Class Dojo

There have been several requests from parents to receive notifications when students are
missing assignments or coming to class unprepared. Though students are responsible
for writing assignments in their planners each night to help prepare them for middle
schooI, (I model how to do this every day) some students still need extra reminders.

To help keep everyone informed, we will start using Class Dojo to help keep track of student
preparedness and behavior. Students will receive points for having their planners signed,
being prepared for Book Club, completing homework on time, completing classroom jobs,
and good behavior.

Students will lose points for not having planners signed, incomplete or late assignments,
poor classroom behavior, not doing classroom/CARES cadet jobs,  and being off-task.

Check out the link below to find out more about this handy classroom tool:
http://www.classdojo.com/about

I will be sending home activation codes next week to enable parents and students to
track progress from home.

GBBC

Gadwalls, and kestrels, and cormorants, oh my! What is GBBC? The Great Backyard Bird Count! For four days every February, bird watchers young and old record all of the different species of birds that they see. This information helps scientists to track bird species, identify population growth or reduction, and see how diseases (such as West Nile virus) are affecting regional bird populations.

It doesn't matter whether you see only five different birds, or bird-watch for only 15 minutes a day--it all helps! Species tracking sheets for your area are available at http://gbbc.birdsource.org/gbbcApps/checklist.

Check out the Great Backyard Bird Count website.

We will be participating the GBBC in our classroom on Friday, February 14th throughout the day and I encourage families to participate at home as well. I will be sending home a local bird species checklist for your convenience. For students who choose to participate, we will share our checklist results with the class on Monday, February 17th.

Happy birding!

I will be putting together a series of video lessons to help you with math homework.
Due to technical difficulties with my iPad, I haven't been able to complete the podcasts,
but I hope to resolve this issue shortly.
